Saturday dawned cloudy and chilly, but as we pulled into the gate at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, the pre-event preparations for DogFest Walk ‘N Roll were already underway! We were escorted to our “booth” location, which was a prime parking spot for the motor home right in the thick of things.
The purpose of the event was to raise funds to support Canine Companions for Independence. This wonderful not-for-profit organization improves the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Headquartered in Santa Rosa, California, CCI is the largest non-profit provider of assistance dogs, and is recognized worldwide for the quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people. The result is thousands of lives enhanced by increased independence and loving companionship.
We were delighted to be invited to participate in this special day, even though it’s common knowledge that Ty and Buster don’t enjoy crowds. When we arrived, we simply settled the boys in with bully sticks and their relaxing tunes, pulled all the window shades, and then went outside to set up. We brought gift bags for everyone who stopped by, with goodies from our sponsors, Cerenia, Quaker Pet Group, SHONGear, Sleepypod, and The Honest Kitchen. And we had a loop of Ty and Buster photos from all around the country playing on our outdoor television to provide inspiration on where people might take their pets on vacation.
Before long, our friends and fur-ends started arriving.
At 9:30 the fundraising walk started, and the GoPetFriendly.com Team gathered for a quick photo and then took off on our stroll. The eight members of our team raised a total of $1,200, giving us a third place finish for most funds raised. Nice work, team! Overall, about 200 people were there, and the event raised more than $20,000 for CCI – a truly successful day!
After the walk, the sun broke out and there was live music, vendor booths to peruse, and fun prize giveaways. By noon things were wrapping up, and when almost everyone had gone, we took Ty and Buster for a trip around the loop – so they could say they’d done it, too.
There’s nothing better than getting together with friends and doing something that benefits others. We had an absolutely fabulous time and want to thank all of you who joined us in person and supported us though donations. We have a truly special community here at GoPetFriendly.com, and I’m so grateful for each of you!
CCI holds DogFest events all over the country, so be sure to watch the website to see when they’re coming to your area!
