Tucked into Pennsylvania’s countryside north of Philadelphia are the picturesque farmsteads and historic towns of Bucks County. You’d be hard pressed to find a more bucolic setting, with horses grazing amidst the rolling hills and grand stone homes that have stood the test of time.
Taking a driving tour of Bucks County’s barns and covered bridges, picnicing at Fonthill Castle, where dogs are welcome to enjoy the park-like grounds and trails, and visiting the local wineries are some of our favorite Bucks County activities. But no trip to the area would be complete without a little shopping at dog friendly Peddlers Village.
Located near the town of New Hope, Peddlers Village attracts nearly two million visitors each year with annual events like the art and contemporary crafts fair, sidewalk sale, scarecrow competition, apple festival, strawberry festival, gingerbread house competition, quilt competition, and Christmas festival, when one million lights illuminate the Village from the Friday before Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day.
What makes this shopping center unique is that feels more like a colonial-style community set in a 42-acre park – complete with landscaped gardens and brick walkways.
There are 65 boutique shops, six restaurants and eateries, and an inn scattered throughout the grounds, each housed in a charming, period-appropriate building.
Many of the shopkeepers go out of their way to make the pups feel welcome with water bowls outside and treats behind the counter.
And when it’s time to rest your paws, there are oodles of benches in the shade just waiting for a pup who needs a place to park.
The only disappointment we found was that none of the restaurants in Peddlers Village had a dog friendly patio where we could get a bite to eat. However, there are many outdoor seating areas available, and getting food wrapped to go was no problem. This also gave us more opportunity to enjoy the lovely scenery.
The next time you’re in the Philly area, be sure to plan a trip out to Bucks County! And check the Peddlers Village website for a schedule of any seasonal festivals or annual events you don’t want to miss. It’s the perfect place for a family outing, and we thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon with my mother and sisters.
