Pet Travel. Made Easy.

Fetching News – Week Ending 03.05.2010

All the news that’s fit to chew on …

I am happy to report that I am writing this issue of Fetching News from the dinette of our RV. We’re not on the road yet, but will be soon. Packing is like a puzzle – what would you be willing to leave behind?

In July 2009, Air Canada reversed its stance against allowing small pets to travel in-cabin. Now, doctors in a recent editorial in The Canadian Medical Association Journal are calling for the ban to be reinstated to assuage allergy sufferers. Doctors wrote: “Pets can be accommodated comfortably and safely in airplane cargo holds, which is where they belong. Airlines must choose to put the needs of their human passengers first, or be forced to do so.” Grrrrrr! Stay tuned.

If you live in or near San Diego, join at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Sunday, March 7th as they judge the 15th Annual Ugly Dog Contest. Proceeds benefit the Del Mar Kiwanis.

For me, the plight of people who are unable to afford vet care was highlighted by this blog post from DoggyBytes. Right after we made our donation, I came across this from The Sick Dog Blog: Fundraising Ideas to Help Pay Expensive Vet Bills. If you are in this position, or you know someone who is, give this post a read or a referral.

Need a FURminator for your dog or cat? There are two fun contests going on over at PetViewsAndNews and WillMyDogHateMe to give one away. You can’t win if you don’t enter (I did).

If you want to know what seat on which plane is the fit best for your in-cabin pet and carrier, follow DogJaunt. Mary-Alice has compiled quite a few of these posts, and I love the mental image of her kneeling on the cabin floor taking accurate measurements and copious notes. What do other passengers think? It’s a ruff job, but someone’s gotta do it!

  • Rod, thanks for linking to my post about Ginger. I think we're up to a little over $1200 including what's been called in to the vet.

I'm not sure how I feel about small pets being allowed to fly in the cabin. I don't have allergies, but I could see a yapping dog driving me nuts.

Got pics of the RV interior yet?

  • The allergy excuse really bugs me! What about people that are allergic to perfumes and scents from cosmetics? I'm not allergic to perfume but last year when I was coming back from Florida, a lady sitting next to me sprayed herself with perfume 20 minutes before we landed. I thought that I was going to faint from the nausea that I was experiencing!

Thanks for mentioning the FURminator contest. Readers can still enter. The deadline is March 9, and there are a lot of funny responses–for what to do with cat and dog hair.
I'm so looking forward to seeing the RV at BlogPaws.
