  • How sad, Bonnie! That would be the worst – and so many of these situations can be prevented with a little extra precaution. I hope their dogs are eventually found.

  • Agreed, Cathy. Far too many pets get lost when they’re traveling with their families, and taking extra precautions can make all the difference. Thanks for your note!

  • Thanks for the tip, Linda – and for all you do to help animals in need! <3

  • I’m a volunteer rescue transport driver and one of my biggest fears is a dog getting loose during hand-off. Dogs can be transferred from driver to driver over a dozen times in some longer transports, and each time there’s the chance of one getting loose. Hand-offs are often in parking lots (away from other cars) – convenient to whatever highway the transport is following. Even when the dogs have a collar or harness, I use a quality slip lead, which I also use with my own dogs if I walk them when we’re traveling. Double leashing a nervous or hyperactive dog when walking them is a good idea, too.

  • These tips are so important! Travel is not the same as being home, you have to be extra careful. I always use a harness when we travel & both my dogs are micro-chipped.Love & biscuits,. Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them

  • Thanks so much for this wonderful article. There have been at least 3 out-of-town dogs get lost in our neighborhood whose owners were visiting friends & relatives. Most were not found…please keep the collars and tags on & make sure they are chipped !!
