Nominations Open In Best City For Pet Travelers Tournament 2014

Inspired by our friend and fellow traveler, FoXnoMad, each year we pay homage to “March Madness” by hosting our very own tournament challenge. Naturally, we give it a pet friendly travel spin … our readers submit their favorite pet friendly destinations, we set up the brackets, and then you vote them down – round by round – until you’ve picked your favorite!

Best City For Pet Travelers Tournament

Cropped Tournament Bracket

Here’s how it works …

  1. You nominate a pet friendly city or town in the US or Canada by email or in the comments section of this post.  (Deadline: March 15, 2014 at 11:59pm Eastern, or when 128 cities have been nominated – whichever comes first.)
  2. Cities will be assigned one per person, on a first-come, first-served basis. Check the list of cities already taken, and then watch for a response notifying you if you’ve gotten the selection you wanted, or if you need to pick an alternate.
  3. My newsletter subscribers got first dibs (sign up now if you don’t want to miss out next year), so one quarter of the slots have already been filled.
  4. The first 128 nominated cities will be matched-up using random selection.
  5. The first round of voting opens on March 17th and we’ll continue – round by round – until we crown a champion.

Important Dates …

The first round of the tournament coincides with the opening rounds of the NCAA March Madness men’s basketball tournament. If sports aren’t really your thing, we’re happy to have you join us here for an equally competitive and entertaining event!

The early rounds of voting usually receive less attention than the later rounds, and many times match-ups are decided by only a few votes. We’ve seen a lot of great pet friendly cities get knocked out in the first or second rounds – so, if you’re looking to take the grand prize this year, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the underdogs in those early match-ups. Here are the dates to keep in mind:

March 17th – Opening Round
March 20th – Round of 64
March 24th – Round of 32
March 27th – Sweet Sixteen
March 31st  – Elite Eight
April 3 – Final Four
April 7th – Championship

The winner will be announced on the blog and by email no later than April 10th, 2014.

  • That’s great, Brett! It sounds like a great place to be a dog. And, I agree with Daniel … “Woofstock” would be funny! ;-)

  • That would be ‘Woofstock’…heheh

  • Humboldt county ca has the best off leash beaches, county parks and off leash hiking trails-headwaters being my favorite! They host Woodstock every year as well as the lovely state gives $50 a month to those citizens who can’t afford to feed their pet.

  • Annapolis was previously nominated, Carol – I hope you’ll help cheer them on!

  • Annapolis, MD is so pet friendly, we hope we can still be included in the tournament.

  • Dallas is not on the list, Betty – so we’ll put you in the tournament. Good luck – I hope you do well!

  • I think i’ve missed the deadline to submit but i hope that Dallas, TX made the list….we get more pet friendly every week at hotels and restaurants and all around the city! But you know my favorite for overnights with my dachshund Bella is at any Kimpton hotel but especially Hotel Palomar Dallas! They spoil her and i love it!

  • I just said I’m glad to see a city from my home state get nominated and I hope you do well, Qourtnie!
